Take the Pledge

I promise to do my part by not allowing trash to blow out of my truck bed. I promise to be aware of trash in my truck bed and stow it in a receptacle before hitting the road. I will stow my trash, pick up trash when I see it, and encourage others to do the same. Together we can keep our local watersheds preserved for swimming, fishing and boating.

As part of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) Trash Blows! Stow It! campaign, Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) is on a mission to reduce the amount of litter caused by trash that blows out of pick-up trucks. PEP is working on this mission with Dog River Clearwater Revival (DRCR) through their DRCR’s EPA/GOMP grant and with the City of Mobile through the Litter-Free Mobile Campaign. One of the largest environmental issues we face along the Gulf Coast is litter and its effects on our local waterways.

Did You Know?

Stowing Trash Helps Everybody

  • Clean communities have a better chance of attracting new residents, new businesses, and tourists
  • 85% of littering is the result of individual attitudes.
  • Motorists generate 53% of litter in the U.S. roadways each year.
  • Almost 29% of truck drivers are aware of unsecured trash flying out of their truck beds.
  • It takes plastic bottles 450 years to decompose in the environment.
  • Litter cleanup costs the U.S. almost $11.5 billion each year, with businesses paying $9.1 billion, and taxpayers picking up the remainder.

Actions

  • Stow all trash in a can before hitting the road.
  • Install a trash receptacle in your vehicle.
  • Create or join a “Green Team” and participate in community cleanups. A “Green Team” consists of a small group of community members who identify and initiate new green practices in their homes and neighborhoods.
  • Reduce pollution and trash in our waterways by refusing styrofoam and plastics from take-out and keeping them out of your home.
  • Educate friends, family and neighbors about the problems caused by loose trash blowing out of trucks. Use the free digital package of PEP’s Trash Blows! Stow It! resources to use for engaging your network in reducing truck trash and litter. The digital package includes a flyer, poster, and yard sign.
